General description
The leaves of Samb. have an unpleasant odour when bruised, which is offensive to most insects, and a decoction of these leaves is sometimes used by gardeners to keep caterpillars from delicate plants. It was the favourite medicinal plant of Hippocrates. The active ingredient in the crude is hydrocyanic acid.
Effect on Plants -
Named Issues
General insect repellent, particularly against caterpillar. Bud worm, army worm. Saw flies. Diamondback moth. Web worm, cut worm. Potato moth. Cluster caterpillar. Spitfire. Fly strike and rot in sheep. Oedematous swellings. Halo spot. Aphids. (3) Cabbage whites (334) Black spot - apples (336) Looper worms (768) Caterpillars (1759)
Stem/trunk and bark - capillary system
The capillaries do not give passage to sap, and waterlogging results in these places. The plant can take up carbon dioxide but cannot release oxygen. Evaporation is increased during the day, but ceases entirely at night. (3)
Leaves
Oedematous swellings, especially in twigs, stems and leaves. (3) I watered all my broccoli with Sambucus....and have no problems with Cabbage White butterflies at all, even though I have seen them fluttering over my brassicas, and my nasturtiums alongside are covered in eggs (but I deliberately didn't treat those as a control) (4 Aug 2010) (334) Sambuccus works well for cabbage looper worms on the brassicas (768) Caterpillars attacked fresh leaves of many plants.... Homeopathic remedy Sambucus nigra worked rather well for this issue. (1759)
Fruit
In this area , this year has been the worst for blackspot in apples in a decade according to the man doing organic juices. (My neighbour, organic grower that exports each year had to give all his crop to the juicer). But I do not have it!!!!!!! For me was the best year.
Best apples are the ones treated ONLY with Homoeopathy - silica, sambuccus, then aconite.
And obviously you are right that the trees respond differently when they are together, but that is not because of a magic relation, is just because we are right in front of the origins of a miasma, when the disease is epidemic and acute and is no other hidden totality to be considered. Photos (336)
