General description
In infected leaf salicylic acid accumulates at the site of infection. When salicylic acid is not available to plants, the systemic acquired resistance does not work. In addition, when Sal. Ac. has been given, it shows increased resistance build-up. Most research has concentrated on tobacco mosaic virus. Only a small number of diseases and crops have been studied. Further testing is certainly warranted, but in this case, with potencies of Nat. sal. and Sal. ac., considered under a separate heading in this book.
Effect on Plants -
Named Issues
Potato virus. Tobacco mosaic virus, blue mould anthracnose, downy mildew, angular leaf spot, Pseudomonas infections. (3) Aphids (496)
Leaves
"Symptoms vary from a light mottling of yellow and green on the leaves, to yellow spots or crinkling of leaf tissue. Sometimes veins may blacken and plants die early. Yellow rings on the youngest leaves; later turning mottled with rings and blotched of different shades of green. Clearing of the veins, coarse mottle, and dark green ring pattern. On stocks, plants can be stunted with distorted leaves, wrinkled and mottled with a lighter colour." (3)
Flowers
Flowers are streaked with white or pale colours. (3) aphids (black) on bush beans (approx 15 plants) and runner beans (approx. 10 plants), both already infested with ants. Infestation restricted to single stalks, but the aphids were very thick in the infested areas (sorry, no pictures - next time). Treatment with Sal-ac 30C, approx. 10 pellets dissolved in 1/2 L water and plants sprayed with this mixture (not just the affected areas, but the whole plant, leaf upper and lower surfaces sprayed). Time of day of the treatment: early evening. Weather hot and dry (June/July 2010, Stuttgart area, Germany) Effect: major reduction in infestation within 2 days! Yet at the same time earwigs on the beans had increased (although these aren't harmful). In the meantime (approx. 3-4 days), the initially unaffected (and untreated) bush beans on the other side of the vegetable patch also became infested with aphids. Fresh treatment of this group and renewed treatment of the previous group, since there will still some remnants of the aphids there: infestation disappeared completely. In the past 3 weeks, there has been no further infestation and no need for further treatment of any sort. (496)
Notes and Academic Papers
These viruses are mainly spread by aphids (see pests section). Cruciferous vegetables, annual flowers and weeds like shepherds purse, field cress, wild turnip, mustard and charlock are most affected by mosaic virus. The latter may be eradicated by Nat. sal., Sal. ac.. or Lac.. preparations. (3)
