A good example of an accidental experiment was provided by Darrel Newberry who farms about 1000 acres of red-yellow podzolic soil in the Ozarks. He was disking in a cover crop and spraying Pfeiffer field spray in the spring when his tractor suddenly started having great difficulty pulling through the soil. He found the whole central part of this particular 5-acre field was much harder than any of other fields had been. then he remembered that the previous fall he had also disked and sprayed these fields but that he had run out of field spray for the last 2 acres of that 5-acre field. Because of this side-by-side contrast, even a native of the Show Me state could not but be convinced of the efficacy of the field spray in improving the structure of his soil after only half a year.
