Various authors on the MO of preps

This board is for sharing results, experiences, concerns and thoughts on preparations - biodynamic or not - for use on plants and soils. These do not include 'peppers'.

Horn Manure or 500 explained

Horn manure is a mysterious amendment out of the bio dynamic system that really isn't that mysterious at all. Popularized by Rudolph Steiner it is often called " 500" and is prepared by filling the horn of a female cow with fresh female cow manure and burying it in the ground (40–60 cm below the surface) for the winter. It is left to decompose all winter and recovered for use the following spring. What comes out is something completely changed and is almost sweet smelling. Changing from a greenish to a brown colour, The material no longer resembles the manure that was packed in it months before
What you are actually creating is a beneficial bacteria and microbe super factory. These microbes love to multiply in manure. Furthermore, these microbes are also found in the horn in great abundance and if you add manure inside the horn, you are actually making an excellent environment for a rocket culture of humus-producing microbes. The microbes migrate from the horn into the manure around them and exponentially explode. The horns are dug up in the spring and the manure "puck "that's inside can be used to brew a beneficial tea spray
If not to be used immediately, it needs to be properly stored. A common method of storage is to have the 500 in earthen pots with loose fitting lids that are placed in a wood box filled with peat moss. The box itself should reside in a cool, dark place, such as a basement or cellar and kept moist but not waterlogged.

The 500 tea spray should be applied in the evening hours. A palm full is enough for 1 acre or one corn horn per hectare. But our horn technique is unique to my farm as I use a larger horn and a unique packing system that actually multiplies the amount of promicrobe material available.

This amount is placed in clean water, like rainwater and rhythmically stirred for an hour and applied via a sprayer.

Stay tuned this spring as we introduce to you a couple of our inventions we use to pull this off.

Here's a picture of our prepared organic horns and the careful viewer will notice the lactating "rings" that can be spotted near the wide end of the horn.
Lactation rings exhibit themselves on the horns of female cows and is a testament to the stress of calving. All through the month of January we are going to be posting some of our bio dynamic processes and practices. not only will we go into the Steiner developed bio dynamic methods but we will also be showcasing a few of our own based on my own research and practices. We hope to better explain some of these practices to you and why we know they work.

Hugo Erbe New Biodynamic Preparations

A purpose of the Agriculture Course given by Rudolf Steiner in 1924 was to root this Christ-Impulse effectively in practical life. The preparations of which Steiner spoke – presumably intended primarily for Central Europe – clearly take into account the activities of those elemental beings which Rudolf Steiner described especially in the lecture cycle ‘Man as Symphony of the Creative Word’, and which he referred to in another context as “most useful”. The preparations revealed in Koberwitz can be seen as a kind of food for these elementals: the 500 Preparation primarily for the Gnomes and Undines working in the earthy and damp elements; the 501 Preparation primarily for the Sylphs and Salamanders working in the air and warmth elements.

Enzo Nastati - Basic Biodynamics in 9 meetings (1994)

p53

We have to find methods that directly influence the supersensible plant (the idea that incarnates) in order to give to the physical plant what it lacks or otherwise balance what is in excess. This activity could define biodynamics, i.e. to influence the dynamic aspect of life and its forces, to act upon the supersensible aspect of the plant. Now we will see how to make ourselves active along the arms of the forces and the processes we sketched in figure 9. We will be practical people of action, agriculturalists! We must take this path and work via the preparations because the way to this higher world is to use the biodynamic preparations....

The preparations are assistants, props in the process of the incarnation of the idea. All the preparations help permit a greater fluidity of etheric forces and thus of these principles of form on the one hand and the processes on the other, of the substances which fill our plant or which will be our plant.

An input from Glen Atkinson

In “Biodynamic Preparations As Forces, Not Substance with Hugh Courtney” states that ‘while the preps work with Forces and Not Substances, he does not know what the forces are, and anyone who says they do is a Liar’
As one who has spent the last 45 years studying, and experimenting with the forces Dr Steiner describes for us, I find this statement ‘shocking’ and disappointing, coming from such a revered BD personage. How can Hugh work with something he does not comprehend? He can observe phenomena and develop some criteria for working, but how can he have studied RS for so long, and not come across RS descriptions of the forces he is describing. An example of three key RS lectures describing some of the forces active in life, can be found in my recent ‘web book ’Essential Biodynamics’ gives a good basis, and further we have Dr Lievegoed’s work providing a more in depth image of the planetary forces RS mentions during the Agriculture lectures , amongst many other possible references of what forces we are working with.

I have always been under the impression that ‘consciously knowing the forces behind manifestation’ was THE main reason for an in depth study of RS’s “Agriculture” and Biodynamics in general. The forces we are working with are those very real electro magnetic (EM) activities from the Stars, Planets, Atmosphere and Earth. We can also venture into the ‘Di Magnetic’ brother of (EM), however this is hardly necessary, given the fact all living things are embedded with the EM fabric of Creation, and very little occurs without going through this matrix. What is it that BD does that is not effecting this fabric?

We gather through Hugh’s talk that he is an avid dowser, and this may well be why he has not bothered to ‘know the creative forces’. He does not need to, he only has to ask his unconsciousness for the answers. Thus he stays ‘unconscious’ of what the forces actually are.
Might I suggest if you ‘like Hugh’ , and desire ‘Conscious Biodynamics’, be prepared to move ‘beyond him’.

... ... the effect of the biodynamic preparations - defined natural remedies that are considered a core element of biodynamic farming - is explained by a facilitation of cosmic forces. Physical effects of the preparations can be measured with scientific methods, but the presumed mode of effect is not comprehensible with natural sciences until now.
